Sauvignon Blanc

The cool and collected cynic with the wild and sexy romantic.

A dance of contrasts, where the freshness of love meets the edge of rebellion.

The duality of Sauvignon Blanc comes from it's powerful character. No matter the quality or the origin of where it is grown, the varietal is always telling an intense story. And a good story needs a great plot. Here it starts with Shepard mesa tucked on the eastern end of Carpinteria. A spot that has not been commercially cultivated for grapes at least since prohibition. It is a mix of a cool climate fueled by the proximity of the ocean and the radiation of a south facing coast, protected from the dominant western winds. The fruit there always struggle to ripen and is under high disease pressure. The result is an ultra racy, lean, citrusy and resinous expression of the varietal. As if it was not enough luck, Martin Ramirez suggested we use another Sauvignon Blanc spot that has barely registered yet. This one called Two Horses, grown in upper Ojai, in an equally secluded canyon but this one, almost facing north and in the shadow of the sulfur mountain ridge above. In the warm climate site the fruit ripened slowly but fully, bringing out its broader, sweeter, almost tropical nature. Both were meant to dance together so we united them in a fierce tango. The cool and collected cynic with the wild and sexy romantic.

Why Love/Hate? “Because it can be among the most beautiful white wines but also the ones I like the least. It is like a loud and opinionated friend that can either fascinate or drive you nuts.” - Fabien

Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite wines. I love the expressive nature of this varietal, from New Zealand to Loire Valley to California. I love them all! - Liz
