SIDE STREET WINE
Brand Overview
Who We Are
Side Street Wine is a small-batch, low-intervention winery based in Ojai, California, focused on producing clean, expressive wines and aperitifs from tiny vineyard parcels across the Ojai Valley and the nearby coastal slopes. We work exclusively with growers farming within 25 miles of downtown Ojai, many of whom farm plots under four acres.
Our wines are shaped by native fermentation, stainless steel élevage, no fining or filtration, minimal sulfur, and a commitment to transparency in both process and sourcing.
Side Street Wine reflects the character of the valley: independent, intentional, and rooted in community. Every wine is produced and poured locally before it ever sees a bottle, continuing the agricultural tradition of wine made close to where it’s grown.
Mission Statement
Side Street Wine exists to make small-batch, local wines fermented with a little mischief—improvised like jazz, rooted in Ojai, and crafted with clarity, intention, and zero waste.
Winemaker Bio
Winemaker/Owner Fabien Castel brings a European sensibility informed by sustainable agriculture and pre-industrial wine traditions. His approach blends technical precision with a light touch, allowing each vineyard to speak without distraction.
He draws inspiration from the historic model of local taverns and wine houses where wine was fermented, stored, and served on-site — a closed-loop system that minimized waste and maximized freshness.
At Side Street Wine, he continues this philosophy through native fermentations, keg service, and a commitment to keeping wines local and honest.
Our Philosophy
Our approach is guided by three core principles:
Hyper-Local Sourcing — Fruit is sourced exclusively from small vineyards in and around Ojai, including Upper Ojai, Ojai Roca, Haase, Two Horses, and coastal Carpinteria sites. This keeps our footprint low and highlights the diversity of microclimates found in the valley.
Low-Intervention Winemaking — We keep the process simple: basket pressing, native yeasts, stainless steel élevage, and no cosmetic manipulation. Expression over correction.
Sustainability at Every Stage — Wine on tap, zero-waste practices, and full-circle resource use form the backbone of our program. From piquette made with rehydrated grape skins to vermouth distilled from surplus wine, minimal waste is built into our system by design.
Our Wines
Side Street produces a focused lineup of red, white, sparkling, rosé, piquette, and vermouth, each tied directly to small, distinctive Ojai-area vineyard sites. Our portfolio includes:
Grenache-based blends (Luné)
Upper Ojai Syrah (Singularity)
Carpinteria Pinot Noir (No Mind)
Bold red blends (Liberté)
Cal-Italian releases (Solaire)
Piquettes (Décroissance)
Sparkling wines (Anarchy)
Botanical vermouth (L’Apero)
